Bergman Academy started as an interior renovation of the old Science Center building in the Ashworth Park area of Des Moines.
In 2007, representatives from the Bergman Academy Board approached our office to assist with master planning and conversion of the former site into a private grade school. The first phase incorporated the first floor area for grades K through 3 including a multi-purpose room for lunches and activities.
Subsequent phases added the lower level spaces to accommodate additional classrooms for grades 4 through 6, an art room, a science room, library, teacher’s lounge, and the replacement of the mechanical system.
In 2013, the discussions shifted to an addition to the building to accommodate a burgeoning enrollment for students through middle school, and an activity center with a full size gymnasium and lockers. The classroom addition was completed in 2016 with a new wing to the north of the existing building. Currently, fund-raising is in progress for the activity center with construction slated for 2019.
